Antique Nakshi Kantha

This is an antique Nakshi quilt, originating from West Bengal. These types of quilts are quite heavy, with multiple layers of plain fabric and very intricate and compact hand embroidery to create patterns on both sides of the quilt.

Although rustic in design, these quilts are a labour of love. The use of bold colours and thick thread, creates a very textured and beautiful quilt, which would have taken weeks to make.

These quilts are made by women in their homes for the use of their own families. 

This quilt is natural cotton with pink stitching and fringing. There is a large patch also from a piece of Nakshi  on the edge. The reverse side is a dark blue fabric with the pink stitching…. making it look purple.
