Antique tribal opium bowl

A beautifully ornate, dark wood opium bowl or kharal, with an exotic tribal feel. 

This piece is hand carved from a single piece of timber, in the traditional elongated oval/boat shape with intricate carved tribal patterns and distinctive handles. 

These pieces are traditionally from Rajasthan in the late 19th, early 20th century and were used to grind opium seeds into water, which was then drunk from the small spout carved through the side handle. 

This piece is in excellent antique condition with handsome proportions, and a dark chocolate patina.
