Vintage Kantha Quilts

‘Kantha’ (pronounced KARN- ta) is a Sanskrit word given to the blanket village women would make by layering their old saris or cloth, and sewing them together with hundreds of tiny lines of stitching. Each quilt would take up to a week of patient work to make.

Today these quilts are revered for their humble origins and recognised as a beautiful handicraft of India.

Each quilt is a one-off beauty, unique in colour, print, texture and weight. As a genuine vintage piece, they may be faded and timeworn, with layers freying through the stitches, or have been mended and patched. These nuances are part of the unique story of each quilt and not considered a flaw.
